About the event
This is a whistlestop tour of the history of the education of the labouring poor over two centuries. We will explore different types of schools such as dame, charity, Sunday and National schools, including some local examples, as well as looking at teachers, what and how children were taught and some children’s experiences of school.
The presentation will be given by Harleston resident Rosemary Steer. Rosemary qualified as an archivist nearly 50 years ago and moved to Suffolk in 1985 to set up the Lowestoft branch of Suffolk Record Office. After various posts in archive and library management, she retired from Suffolk County Council in 2011. Rosemary then worked as a freelance researcher and adult education lecturer focusing on social and family history.
