About the event
St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, is a busy City of London church with a captivating history extending over 2,000 years. Two devastating episodes of destruction are pivotal in its long history. The Great Fire of London, 1666 destroyed the medieval church leading to Wren designing a new church completed in 1675. And during WWII in 1940 incendiary bombs seriously damaged the church leaving a burnt out shell which led to fascinating discoveries made in the 1950’s following archaeological excavations undertaken by Professor Grimes. This talk will look at these discoveries revealing the many chapters of the church, with a focus on the extraordinary finding of the burial vaults in the crypt, (in use from 1675 sealed closed in 1852) and skeletal analysis providing a unique insight to the lives of some of the parishioners. Join Jelena Bekvalac of Museum of London, to find out more.
