About the event
The capital’s streets once were filled with food. Hawkers wandered the city and cried out their wares, from everyday essentials like milk, turnips, and mackerel to occasional treats like oysters, pies, and oranges. This was difficult and dangerous work, but Londoners relied on street sellers from the age of Shakespeare to the brink of the First World War. Drawing on his new book, historian Dr Charlie Taverner introduces these vital retailers and what they reveal about the city’s past and present.
